Historical Note:

After the Depression of the 1930s, a group of ministers and laypersons requested that the Commission on Appraisal be created in order to examine all aspects of the American Unitarian Association, and to look into ways that the Unitarian movement in the United States could be revitalized. In 1934, it was decided that the Commission would meet annually and create a report to be delivered to the General Assembly every four years. The first director of the Commission was Frederick May Eliot. When the Universalist Church of America and the American Unitarian Association merged in 1961 to form the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Commission on Appraisal was written into the bylaws of the new Association as a permanent body of the General Assembly. Currently, the Commission is made up of nine members serving staggered six-year terms. The members are elected by the General Assembly and are not eligible to serve a second term. It is the only non-Board and non-administrative body with the authorization to look into all aspects of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

This collection includes minutes of meetings; reports to the General Assembly; reports by the Commission on various subjects, including assessments of the 1961 merger of the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America; correspondence; and other administrative records.
