Historical Note:

Since the 1970s, Helmut Koester of Harvard Divinity School and his students and colleagues have been creating and collecting slides of important archaeological sites and museums in the Mediterranean area. The slides are used for teaching and research in New Testament studies, Greek and Roman mystery religions, and early Christian history. The archaeological sites represented in the slides are located in cities and religious centers that were especially important during the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods (ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE). They include sites in Athens, Rome, Corinth, Ephesus, Sardis, Thessaloniki, Hierapolis, and Philippi. Most of the slides document the architecture and layout of these archaeological sites. There are also many slides depicting inscriptions, statues, coins, and mosaics that were found at the sites. These objects picture the gods and rulers of the ancient world and help illustrate the overlapping iconography of divinity and kingship.

These slides were digitized and cataloged with support from a grant from the Harvard University Library's Digital Initiative (LDI). This collection contains the original slides that were digitized; the digital images are available in HOLLIS Images, a union catalog of visual resources at Harvard.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of over 6,000 slides. Some of the slides are arranged by subject and others by the location in which the slides were taken. The slide numbers are based on an original arrangement scheme, based on box number, column in the box, and slide number. For example, slide 44B2 was in box 44, column B, and was the 2nd slide in that column. The folders reflect the same order that the boxes did, and the numbers on the folders refer to the first and last slides that are found in the folder.

The subject and place categories are as follows:
