Albright, William Foxwell. Collected Papers, 1916-1972.

Biographical Information:

William Foxwell Albright (1891-1971) was an evangelical American Methodist archaeologist, biblical scholar, linguist, and expert on ceramics. He was born in Coquimbo, Chile to Protestant missionaries Wilbur Finley and Zephine Viola Foxwell Albright. He married Dr. Ruth Norton in 1921 in Jerusalem, and they had four sons. Albright pursued his undergraduate studies at Upper Iowa University and received his Ph.D. in 1913 from the Oriental Seminary at Johns Hopkins University, where he later taught from 1929 to 1959. He was also the director of the American School of Oriental Research at Johns Hopkins. One of his major achievements was confirming the authenticity of the Dead Sea Scrolls following their discovery. Also, in 1923 he made the first significant excavation of a tumulus near Jerusalem--possibly the site where an ancient king of Judah was memorialized. He edited the Anchor Bible volumes on Jeremiah, Matthew, and Revelation and his publications include Yahweh and the Gods of Canaan, The Archaeology of Palestine, From the Stone Age to Christianity, and The Biblical Period from Abraham to Ezra.

Important Notice:

This collection is divided into two parts. The first part, boxes 1-8, contains Albright's published materials and is unrestricted. Anyone may use these materials without special permission. The second part, boxes 9-32, contains Albright's unpublished materials and is restricted to those people who have obtained the permission of the committee named by an agreement between the heirs of Albright's estate and the American Schools of Oriental Research. The committee consists of Frank Moore Cross, William L. Moran, David Noel Freedman, and Thomas O. Lambdin.

Gift Agreement:

3 September 1974
Mrs. William F. Albright
3401 Greenway Apt. 2A
Baltimore, Maryland

Dear Mrs. Albright:

During the course of the summer Prof. G.E. Wright arranged that the unpublished manuscripts and notes of your husband ("Class B" of the agreement of 1 July 1973) be transferred to this library so that they could receive proper care and be under closer control. This transfer was completed shortly before Dr. Wright's recent death, and we are now in the process of placing the material into our manuscript area.

I would like to assure you that as depository we will abide by the terms of the agreement with the American Schools of Oriental Research and the restrictions to access therein.

Sincerely,

Peter L. Oliver

THIS AGREEMENT, entered into this 1st day of July, 1973, by and between the heirs of William F. Albright, deceased, Ruth Norton Albright, Paul Norton Albright, Hugh Norton Albright, Stephen Foxwell Albright and David Foxwell Albright, hereinafter called "the heirs" and The American Schools of Oriental Research, Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., hereinafter called "the School".

W I T N E S S E T H

WHEREAS, the parties hereto desire to make certain agreements concerning two groups of the Nachlass of the late William F. Albright previously delivered to the School which include:

A. Certain bound books and stapled reprints (Class A);

B. Certain manuscripts and notes, finished or not, but unpublished (Class B).

NOW, THEREFORE, the parties hereto enter into the following Agreement:

1. The School and the heirs agree that the above listed materials are and shall remain the property of the heirs. No use shall reduce this right of ownership unless it is surrendered in a written agreement signed by the School and the heirs.

2. The School agrees to provide a dry and proper place for the Nachlass as long as they remain in their hands, to notify the heirs, through Ruth Norton Albright or to another whom she shall designate of the monies gained by the disposal of any part or portion of those materials designated as Class A above, and to give all money received, minus a small fee for handling, to the account of the William Foxwell Albright Institute of Archaeological Research, in Jerusalem, to be used toward excavation. Since the money is to remain in the hands of the School, a fee of not more than ten percent (10%) of monies received is agreed upon as just and fair.

The School further agrees to report any such receipt of money for material in Class A, to Ruth Norton Albright each January, before the 15th of that month, so that it may be used as a properly recorded contribution to the William Foxwell Albright Institute of Archaeological Research during the preceding year.

3. In regard to material under Class B the School agrees to open this material solely for inspection and possibly use by the following:

G. Ernest Wright
Frank M. Cross
William L. Moran
David Noel Freedman
Thomas O. Lambdin

and the School will make arrangements for the aforesaid named persons (hereinafter sometimes referred to as "the group" to report to the heirs as to whether there is, in the group's opinion, any suitable material for further studies and investigation. If such material is found the School shall inform the heirs through Ruth Norton Albright as to the Group's recommendation as to how the Class B material should be best handled in the publishing of any future articles or books.

4. The School also agrees to provide the heirs with the Group's general plan under which the original work provided in the materials shall be given due recognition, including an outline of the various ways that full recognition of the work already done by William F. Albright shall be clearly identified, even to the point of showing that his treatment of a subject cannot stand up to later findings, that it has been substantiated by later findings, or otherwise.

5. In the improbable case that a book or books may result from such study, the School agrees that 20% of any royalties shall be sent to the heirs through Ruth Norton Albright.

6. The above shall not prevent the group from using the material for such purposes as the source of material for work by students considered capable of gaining benefit from such use; but the student must be bound by the same terms in such use as the group itself. And the group agrees to notify the heirs, through Ruth Norton Albright, of such use, before the student is allowed to use the material.

7. It is further agreed that two copies of any article or books shall be sent to the heirs, through Ruth Norton Albright.

WHEREFORE, the parties hereto have affixed their hands and seals as of the day first stated above.
