Historical Note:

The Universalist Church movement began in New York City in 1790 when John Murray, the first American Universalist, arrived in the city but was forbidden to preach at City Hall. The First Universalist Church was founded in 1796, followed by the Second Universalist Society in 1830. In 1832 representatives from six city wards met to found the Third Universalist Society, and in 1838 the Fourth Universalist Society was formed.

The Fourth Society organized under the name "Friends of the Final Restitution," indicating clearly their position in the theological battles about hell and salvation that were then ranging in Protestant New York. Under the leadership of renowned preacher Edwin Hubbell Chapin from 1848 to 1880, the group took the title "Church of the Divine Paternity," a name that persisted for over 100 years. The parish constructed a landmark church on the Upper West Side, completed in November 1898. Following the period of consolidation, internal dissension, financial trouble, and low membership, the name changed in 1967 to Fourth Universalist Society in the City of New York.

In 1949 debates began with the Unitarian denomination on the possibility of union, with a great deal of ambivalence in the Fourth Universalist Society. While the congregation was concerned with ecumenism, creating an All Faiths Sunday and an All Faiths Hall, they disagreed on an acceptable minister and struggled with their official votes on the merger. In January 1960 the church began a study group on the consolidation. They raised special concern over lost access to the Eternal Hope Fund, resulting in a lawsuit. The official consolidation occurred over a few years, from 1960 to 1963.

Several important programs and social efforts occurred under the umbrella of the Fourth Universalist Society. The Chapin Home for the Aged and Infirm was founded in 1869, serving people of all faiths and located on the East Side until 1913 when it relocated to Jamaica, Queens. The church supported the First Universalist Mission, Brevoort Hall, a denominational charity. As other Universalist churches died out, the mission became mainly the task of Ta Kala, organized in 1890 by the younger women of Divine Paternity. They provided education for mothers, a free kindergarten, and assistance to church facilities. There was also an Industrial School for Boys, a Girls' Club, a Fresh Air Fund, the Women's Universalist Alliance, and the Social Responsibility Committee.

Some of the more well-known members of the Fourth Universalist Society include Horace Greeley, Phineas T. Barnum, Louise Whitfield Carnegie, and Lou Gehrig. (From Universalism in New York City: A History of the Fourth Universalist Society, 1838-1998, by Phyllis Stock-Morton, 1999)

In its early years the Fourth Society met first in various downtown locations. The laying of the cornerstone for a new church on Central Park West on November 14, 1897, and the dedication on November 2, 1898, prompted centennial celebrations in the next century. Designed by architect William Appleton Potter, the building is noted for its vaulting, its vertical windows, and a modified Latin cross plan, with a Gothic tower contrasting the high rise apartment buildings in the area. Tiffany produced the Communion Table, and the Carnegie family donated the Whitfield Memorial Organ. Gothic stained glass windows were made by the English firm J. R. Clayton. Records include efforts to restore and maintain the facilities. The building came to be known as Landmark on the Park.
