In 1871 Edward P. Bassett, Calvin Cone, Peter H. Bateson, Francis E. Abbott, and H. E. Howe associated themselves for the purpose of publishing books, pamphlets, and other publications, plus a weekly paper to be called The Index to be devoted to free religion.

This volume contains records of stockholder meetings, board of director meetings and financial records, and the certificate of incorporation for the Index Association.
