Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. Audio-Visual Records Series: Oversized Photographic Prints.

Scope and Content:

This collection contains photographs that were apparently used for publicity purposes by the Service Committee for brochures, posters, etc. It demonstrates the work of the committee in many countries, including countries of Central and South America and Africa, and the United States.

  • bMS 16190/2 (1) UUSC Programs (Scrapbook): This folder contains photographs of individuals and buildings, c. 1970s, which contain the following captions:
    • a. Chicago, Illinois: Neighborhood Renewal—On the North Side of Chicago, local ghetto residents have formed their own Neighborhood Commons Corporation.
    • b. Chicago, Illinois: Ron Engel talks to Zurline (Hill?), occupant of top apt.
    • c. Chicago, Illinois: The fruits of their labor has made it possible for the Neighborhood Commons Corporation to become the community agency through which urban renewal funds will be channeled to improve community.

    • f. Oakland, California: Relevant Relating: This past winter, it was decided to begin first with the white person in his own community. A program was structured to help the volunteers come to grips with white racism—individual and institutional—that is so deeply rooted in American life. A 12-week seminar program has been developed to study the causes, manifestations, and elimination of white racism.
    • g. Los Angeles, California: Communications Hookup: In Los Angeles, UUSC and local Unitarian Universalists are sponsoring a project designed to create non-exploitative fraternal relationships between middle-class volunteers in work situations with ghetto community groups. Since 1967, some 300 volunteers have contributed 5,000 man hours of service to ghetto community groups working towards self-determination.
    • h. Los Angeles, California: Initiated by the project director, Grady Smith, "interracial dialogues" are now required orientation—enabling the potential volunteer to discover the problems of the ghetto community people
    • i. Awo Omamma, Biafra/Nigeria: Creating a Future
    • j. Biafra/Nigeria: At Awo Omamma, UUSC staff member Ben Nzeribe inspired the people of his community to build a modern 75 bed hospital; a fine, new school; the area's first water system; a post office; and three well-baby clinics that dramatically reduced infant mortality.

    • l. Biafra/Nigeria: UUSC's Oma Resettlement Project in Awo Omamma is the first demonstration of an inexpensive program enabling Biafran refugee families to become self-sufficient in a short period of time.

    • b. Vietnam: Eight Vietnamese have been recruited for in-service social work training as members of the UUSC staff. Already they are meeting with tenants of Ban Co to determine the needs of residents.

    • e. Mandeville, Jamaica: A Multi-Discipline Approach
    • f. Jamaica: Part of a grass roots community effort to educate boys and girls from 4 to 7 years of age. Classes are often held in a one-room shack, on a teacher's porch, or under a mango tree.
    • g. Jamaica: Teaching materials are meager to the vanishing point. With little or no paper to write on, children use chalk and small slates.
