Organization Description:

St John’s Episcopal Church is located in the suburban community of Franklin, approximately 1 mile from the Franklin Depot commuter rail station, and off of I-495. Many parishioners commute to Boston for work. Grace Church is located in North Attleboro, not far from I-95 and I-495. The congregation is mostly retired. The parishes are approximately 20 minutes apart. The Priest alternates parishes on Sunday, celebrating Eucharist in one, while lay leaders in the other preside over Morning Prayer. A seminary Intern would have the opportunity to lead that service, to assist the Priest at Eucharist, to preach monthly, to be involved in discussions and decision-making about the collaboration between the parishes, and to lead programs and committees. Both parishes want to be involved in ministry with their communities, but find that their energy is taken up with family obligations, as well as with keeping the parishes afloat. The collaboration is an attempt to do just that.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

A student intern will experience the delights and challenges of serving two congregations. They will attend Vestry meetings in both parishes and interact with lay leaders; they will both lead Worship and observe me doing so, preach monthly, and be involved in other ways that meet their learning goals – possibly children, youth or adult formation; ministry in the community, etc.

Commute/Transportation Information:

Students would need to arrange travel to and from sites.

Supervision:

Rev Kathy has been the Rector at St John’s for 5 years. They began collaborating with Grace in Sept 2022, at which time she also became Priest-in-Charge there. Rev. Kathy would plan to meet with the Intern weekly to hear their experience, answer questions, reflect theologically, and plan for the future. It may also be helpful to have a lay committee to meet with and with whom to bounce around ideas.
