Organization Description:

The Muslim Chaplaincy serves MIT’s over 400 Muslim students, including both undergraduate and graduate students. The Muslim Chaplain to MIT provides spiritual support through individual conversations and gatherings for learning and prayer. She participates in the interfaith community of chaplains at MIT and educates the wider campus about Islam. She also partners with the leaders of a vibrant and active student group, the Muslim Students Association (MSA), to foster a supportive community for Muslim students. The Office of Religious, Spiritual, and Ethical Life at MIT provides a dedicated Muslim Prayer Room and works with the Muslim Chaplain and the MSA to advocate for the needs of Muslim students, including time and space for daily prayer, single-gender housing, halal food, and academic accommodations during Ramadan.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

The field education student will have opportunities to engage with every aspect of chaplaincy work. They will attend weekly meetings with the Muslim Chaplain and student leaders and join in the collaborative planning and implementation of events and advocacy efforts. They will participate in Friday prayers and the Friday evening spiritual gathering, and offer an occasional teaching. They will be invited to propose and lead an additional class or gathering to be held on Tuesday evenings. During the month of Ramadan, their work will be primarily in the evenings, supporting the community iftars.
