Organization Description:

NAHCA offers support for current and aspiring professional Hindu spiritual caregivers working in higher education, healthcare, corrections, military, and community settings. We also offer support to non-Hindus providing spiritual care to Hindus in these settings. NAHCA’s mission includes creating and disseminating resources on Hindu spiritual care and offering opportunities for professional development, training, and endorsement. From our inaugural conference launch mid-Pandemic during Memorial Weekend in 2020 our programming has been entirely virtual. Our Board members are Hindu/Dharmic chaplains/spiritual caregivers working in the fields of higher education and healthcare. One of our Board members, Vineet Chander, pioneered Hindu chaplaincy in higher education at Princeton. We continue to receive inquiries about Hindu chaplaincy from individuals and hiring managers throughout the US. Hindu chaplaincy is clearly a growing field. Since NAHCA’s inauguration our distribution list to individuals working in spiritual care continues to grow. NAHCA members work in all the fields outlined above.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

We offer an intern a unique opportunity to be a part of the first and only professional association in the US dedicated to Hindu spiritual caregiving. While working with our Board members an intern will gain unique insights into running numerous chaplaincy programs around the US that provide spiritual caregiving for minority groups. The student may help organize and run in person events, book groups, or other programs based on their interests and learning goals. Additionally, an intern will gain an education in running an international organization.

Commute/Transportation Information:

The activities required of an intern may be accomplished remotely though we would require regular in person one-on-one meetings to ensure that the intern is on track with their internship requirements. While most meetings can occur on Harvard’s campus, opportunities to meet at Tufts might arise. During the academic year, Tufts operates a shuttle service between Davis Square (a Red Line T stop) and our Medford/Somerville campus. Tufts also operates a shuttle from our Medford/Somerville campus to the SMFA at Tufts in downtown Boston. The shuttles can be tracked on the web or by mobile phone. There is also the 96 bus which connects Harvard Square to the Boston Ave/Winthrop stop. Thus access to Tufts from Harvard and the Boston area is easily facilitated by public transportation.
