Organization Description:

The Barre Center for Buddhist Studies (BCBS) offers the integration of study and practice in exploring the many streams of teaching and expression that flow from the sources of early Buddhism. Our onsite and online programs combine contemplative and relational elements supportive of personal transformation. As an inclusive community, we welcome all interested in Buddhist inquiry as a way of developing wisdom and compassion for the benefit of all beings.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

We welcome field education interns interested in exploring and contributing to the integration of Buddhist study and practice in ways that are relevant to contemporary life. So far, our interns have engaged in a variety of projects. They have managed online retreats, courses, and public events. (To get a sense of the kinds of programs we offer, please visit: https://www.buddhistinquiry.org/courses/.) This involves some work on Zoom and often means that interns are able to sit in on online programs, give opening talks on behalf of BCBS and also dana talks at the end of programs, and generally support teachers and participants. In addition, our interns have helped with the publication of the BCBS Insight Journal, doing some editing, interviews, and, if it makes sense, guest editing an issue on a theme of their choosing. We also have had interns interested in working in our organic gardens, cooking in the kitchen, landscaping, and doing other more physically engaged projects necessary to run the retreat center. Whether our interns are in residence during the summer or primarily working virtually during the academic year, we have tried to make it possible for interns to also occasionally come on retreat either to participate in a program or just spend some time in a cottage at BCBS.

Commute/Transportation Information:

We expect our interns to (1) primarily work remotely during the academic year with occasional retreats at BCBS; (2) work remotely over the summer with occasional retreats at BCBS; or (3) be in residence at BCBS for a shorter period, for example the summer months.  Thus, no regular commuting is necessary.
