Organization Description:

Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital (BWFH) is a 171-bed non-profit, community teaching hospital located in Jamaica Plain, just 3.4 miles from the Longwood medical area, and across the street from the Arnold Arboretum. Founded in 1900, BWFH has a long history of meeting the health care needs of the residents of southwest Boston and surrounding suburbs. We offer comprehensive medical, surgical and psychiatric care as well as complete emergency ambulatory, and diagnostic services.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

The student will participate in an instructional course on spiritual care and ketamine therapy led by BWFH’s Spiritual Care Coordinator and Director of the Ketamine Therapy Program. Following this course, the student will observe all stages of treatment and provide spiritual care to patients undergoing ketamine therapy and their families. The student will have the opportunity to co-facilitate groups for patients, engage in research evaluating the role of chaplaincy in ketamine therapy, and engage in verbatim, case-based, and narrative writing. In addition to supporting BWFH’s Ketamine Therapy Program, the student will also provide spiritual care to patients, families, and staff on inpatient units. Key components of the learning and practice of this internship include: engaging a patient’s subjective reality; guiding meditation, visualization, and breathing exercises; supporting meaning making, transformation and integration of treatment experience; and being present during moments of crisis.

Commute/Transportation Information:

Options for transportation: 1) Harvard shuttle to Longwood Medical Area then shuttle from BWH to BWFH, 2) 38 bus line, 3) Commuter Rail or Orange Line then walk through the Arboretum, 4) park in a BWFH lot then shuttle from the lot to BWFH. BWFH will offer parking in a lot near the hospital with access to a shuttle that would bring the student directly to the hospital.
