Organization Description:

Western Avenue is a vibrant and multicultural church that welcomes people from all walks of life to encounter Godly transformation. Our excitement for dynamic preaching and worship is reflected in our contemporary and traditional worship environment. As a result, our sanctuary atmosphere is unmistakably intergenerational. We are located between Harvard and Central Square, driven by our founders' call to cultivate worship at the heart of Christ and the beloved community. We are a church committed to authentic worship, where people can experience change and spiritual growth. Western Avenue offers several opportunities for practicing religious education through our weekly bible classes on Wednesdays and Sundays. We also offer opportunities for pastoral care via hospital visitations and neighborhood outreach. Our preaching and worship is conducted on Sundays and is led by the Pastor and Associate Ministers, allowing for any field education student to be guided through these weekly practices. Alongside these opportunities, Western Avenue also has opportunities for students to assist in the plans of the church and administrate in other aspects of the church. Our primary expectations for our field education students is to develop their leadership skills and learn how to use the skills and tools acquired from previous experiences in our church community.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

We welcome students to design their own project to meet their ministry objectives. Students can learn how to develop and interpret a church budget and do monthly/year1y profit and loss reconciliations. Students can develop leadership and coordination skills by working with our ministry groups: youth and children, young adults, and seniors. The student will have the opportunity to participate in formulating and organizing the weekly teaching curriculum for the church (bible study and Sunday school); also applying what has been developed through preaching, teaching, and ministering to a multigenerational congregation. There are also opportunities for pastoral care and community outreach: a response to members and people outside of the community that may request hospital visitations, or our church's community support resources (food pantry program). Students are able to coordinate and organize liturgy and worship in coordination with our Music and Worship Director. Students may also develop arts of ministry in preaching and worship that can allow them to receive ministerial licensing and ordination in our churches affiliated bodies (American Baptist Church, National Baptist Convention, and the Progressive National Baptist Convention).
