Organization Description:

Applications will be accepted for Academic Year 2024-2025. This site is not accepting applications for summer 2024. Spaulding spiritual care providers/chaplains are dedicated to providing culturally sensitive spiritual care to people of all faiths, traditions and beliefs. We serve as compassionate spiritual companions to patients, their loved ones, as well as colleagues throughout the hospital. As part of a patient’s healthcare team, we collaborate with other disciplines to help patients share their story, name any struggles and connect with sources of love and peace during a time of change, loss and disruption.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

The student learns how to provide spiritual care with patients of all religious traditions, as well as those not affiliating with religion yet having their own practices and sources of meaning in their lives.AS patient admissions at SHC last weeks or more, a student has time to deepen spiritual care relationships with our patients. The student is invited to participate in weekly interdisciplinary team meetings about the patients as well as committees related to Ethics and Support After Death

Commute/Transportation Information:

SHC is a 10-minute walk from HDS. For those needing to drive, free parking is available.

Arts of Ministry Competencies Offered:

  • Administration and Program Development
  • Pastoral Care and Counseling
  • Religious Education and Spiritual Development

Supervision:

My supervisory style is to offer my own unique perspectives and wisdom (after supervising a HDS student for each of 8 years). You will bring your own life experience and unique gifts. I allow students to initiate theological reflection about their spiritual care encounters. As in Bill Maroon's Haiku, recalled by Charlene Jin Lee in an essay, "We meet awkwardly. I invite you to walk. I find you dancing."

Additional Information:

  • Number of Students: 1
  • Total Compensation: $6000.00
  • Type of Compensation: Work Study
  • Additional Notes: In addition to Pastoral Care and Counseling, past students have also been able to set and meet goals in several other Arts of Ministry at SHC.

Acceptance is contingent on screening by SHC Occupational Health and SHC Human Resources.

Chaplain will work with students to set up a mutually convenient schedule on weekdays. Mr. Bruce Aguilar, BCC (board-certified chaplain), is Director of Spiritual Care for Spaulding Rehabilitation Network.
