Organization Description:

Spaulding Hospital Cambridge, or SHC, is part of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network and treats about 1, 500 patients per year. SHC focuses on long-term acute medical care, in contrast to the rehabilitation focus at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston. Our patient population are living with serious illness, often of a life-threatening nature, such as Oncology, Pulmonary and Vent Weaning, Disorders of Consciousness and other complex medical diagnoses.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

The student learns how to minister with a religiously pluralistic population of patients and their family members. As patient admissions last at least a few weeks, a student has time to deepen pastoral relationships with our patients. The student is invited to participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and committee meetings with the supervisor and/or another staff chaplain; committees include one on Ethics, the other on make decisions about a patient’s “goals of care” (curative vs. palliative).
