Organization Description:

Old South is a mid-sized (~550 members) vibrant urban church with roots deep in Boston and the nation's history. A congregation of the United Church of Christ, we are a theologically progressive Christian community. We seek to embody God’s radical, life-changing love through our ministries of worship and welcome, teaching and service, justice and action. We are the “Church of the Open Door.” Our doors are open to the public, 7 days a week to be a sanctuary in the city to all. Our community is predominantly white, with significant numbers of Asians and Asian-Americans and small number of African-Americans. We have a large population of LGBTQ+ people. Socioeconomically, we are diverse in the sense that millionaires share the pews and the work of the church with unhoused people, with most folks somewhere in between. We are strengthened for the faithful work of justice in our three worship services: Thursday evening Worship, First Worship and Festival Worship on Sundays. Life at OSC is rich in opportunities for impact and growth.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

The position of Field Education Intern is designed to nurture the professional growth and development of candidates preparing for ministry by creating meaningful supervised opportunities for ministerial leadership in a historic urban church environment, and to utilize the gifts and experiences of the Field Education Intern to support, serve, and expand the ministry and programs of Old South Church in Boston, an Open and Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ. The Intern can expect to gain experience teaching Bible study and other adult education classes and leading worship and preaching in a variety of settings, including our large, formal 11AM Sunday Festival Service, our vibrant 9AM Sunday communion service, or our casual 6PM Thursday Jazz Service. The Intern will have an additional area of focus to be discerned in concert with their supervisor and the pastoral staff. Areas of focus include: young adult ministry, youth ministry, adult education, racial justice, climate justice, urban ministry and outreach, and small group ministry.
