Founded in 1644, First Church is rich in tradition but also engaged in contemporary culture. FCW draws its members primarily from Wenham and its sister community Hamilton as well as neighboring Beverly and Ipswich. Although the community is largely residential and middleclass, FCW has a long-standing commitment to social action and global mission. The church sponsors intergenerational mission trips and has an endowed Special Grants Committee that makes over $50,000 grant awards each year. FCW has a strong ministry to youth and families offering a vibrant Christian Education program. The church at worship values contemplative prayer, inspirational music, and progressive theology from the pulpit. Goals for the coming year include a high impact mission program with the Christian Appalachian Project, www.chrisapp.org, and guided congregational conversations around controversial issues.
