Organization Description:
The Outdoor Church is a church for homeless men and women in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Through worship services held outdoors in all seasons and all weather and extensive programs of street outreach and pastoral visitation, we make the church accessible to those who cannot or will not attend conventional churches. Every Sunday, the Outdoor Church offers a communion service at 9:00 AM at the Porter Square T station. Every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons, we take sandwiches, juice, toiletries and clean white socks around Harvard Square and Central Square, where we offer material and spiritual support to any individual in need that we encounter. The Outdoor Church also provides many pastoral services to our parishioners, including memorial services and visitations at prisons, hospitals, jails, locked wards and shelters.
Opportunities for Student Involvement:
The student intern will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of the Outdoor Church’s ministry. They will have opportunity to lead prayers, prepare and offer exegetical comment on the day's scripture reading, and participate in the administration of the sacraments at our Sunday morning worship services. They will also join our ministry team for our weekly Sunday afternoon outreach, and will participate in our outreach on Tuesdays and Saturdays on a rotating basis. They will likewise have the opportunity to visit our parishioners at meal programs, hospitals, jails, DMH facilities, and prisons.
