Organization Description:
The First Religious Society in Newburyport, founded in 1725 as the Third Parish in Newbury, is an active, urban/suburban Unitarian Universalist church with 366 adult members and 180 children and youth and a staff of seven. The historic meeting house was built in 1801. The congregation maintains a partner church relationship with the Unitarian Church of Ujszekely, Transylvania (Romania). The church has many active programs for adults and youth, including an excellent teen choir and small group ministry. We are diverse in age, theology, and sexual orientation with a growing population of young families. Newburyport, which is situated at the mouth of the Merrimack River, is the smallest city in Massachusetts. Located about 45 minutes north of Boston via route 95, it has a rich maritime history, lovely federal architecture, and a beautifully restored downtown area. Members come from several communities; many commute to work in Boston. We are mostly white, mostly middle and upper middle class. The First Religious Society and its members are engaged in the community both socially and ecumenically. We are constantly looking to increase those activities. We aim to be a theologically liberal presence in our community.
Opportunities for Student Involvement:
As the Student Minister, the student will engage in many of the tasks of parish ministry. The specifics will be negotiated depending on the student's needs and the needs of the church.
Commute/Transportation Information:
Newburyport is served by commuter rail from North Station (about an hour and ten minutes) and by bus from South Station. Neither the Newburyport park and ride (at the bus station) nor the train station is close to downtown where the church is located. This pretty much makes a car a necessity, especially on Sundays.

Supervision:
The minister and student will have weekly supervision meetings in which we engage in reflection of things completed and upcoming, the student’s formation and experiences upcoming. This hour is a gift to both of us. The student also meets monthly with a four-member Teaching Parish Committee. This will be at an mutually agreeable time and can be in person or on Zoom.
