Organization Description:

The North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) is a 350 bed not-for-profit community based health care facility. Services encompass primary, emergency/trauma, and acute care. It is home to the NSMC Heart Center, The North Shore's only comprehensive cardiac service offering interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery as well as the complete obstetrical services of the Birthplace, emergency care, pediatric, adult and geriatric psychiatry services. The NSMC includes Salem Hospital and Mass General for Children at North Shore Medical Center in Salem, MA and Union Hospital in Lynn, MA. Mass General for Children at North Shore Medical Center is based on the campus of NSMC Salem Hospital and provides a wide range of community and specialty pediatric services through a collaboration with Mass General Hospital for Children. Services include pediatric emergency care, a pediatric inpatient unit, pediatric psychiatry, physical, occupational, speech and audiology therapy as well as a range of subspeciality care in pediatric surgery, orthopedics, cardiology, gastroenterology, otolaryngology and more.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

Students will participate as members of the pastoral care department, having the opportunity to minister to and experience a wide range of health care concerns and settings. Student opportunities include not only ministering to the spiritual needs of patients from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds but also ministering to hospital staff and having the opportunity to facilitate and participate in group work. Students will also take part in interdisciplinary team meetings and plan and officiate interfaith worship services. There are many opportunities throughout the medical center for innovative student leadership.
