Organization Description:

Children's Hospital, Boston is the largest pediatric medical center in the United States. It has 400 inpatient beds, over 100 outpatient programs and is the primary pediatric teaching hospital for Harvard University. Patients and families come from all over the world, New England and the Boston area for care. The philosophy is to care for the whole child and the whole family in an interdisciplinary approach.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

Chaplain intern providing multi-faith pastoral care to children, their families and staff on specific in-patient units. S/he will have the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary health care team in addressing the spiritual, emotional and ethical issues that arise as a result of serious or chronic illness. Key components for the program will be: pastoral ministry to people in crisis, developing listening skills, learning about child development and integrating that into pastoral practice, learning about religious and spiritual traditions other than one's own, and theological reflection.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of at least 1 CPE unit (2 completed units preferred). Must provide copy of final evaluations (yours and supervisor's) from your most recent CPE unit, and written permission to speak with your supervisor); two verbatims of hospital ministry; Openness to learning in a demanding inpatient clinical setting; Willingness to minister to persons of many religious traditions in ways that are congruent with others' piety and beliefs; Interest in pastoral care to children, adolescents and their parents; Full or part-time student at Harvard (or other BTI school); Successful completion of : hospital health screening orientation with the hospital volunteer department; CORI check; references. Program requirements: In-house requirements : 400 hours of in-hospital time); 12 hours patient ministry on-site/week vs 40 hrs/week x 8 weeks during summer; 1 hour of supervision on-site/week.

Commute/Transportation Information:

On the Green D and E lines; free shuttle from Harvard campus to Harvard Medical School (next door to Children's); parking very expensive and to be avoided.
