First Parish in Concord is a large church community of historical significance in the UUA. It was first gathered in 1636 and has been on its present site almost as long. Our beautiful building was constructed in 1901 and is the fourth iteration of the original meeting house. Today, First Parish is a dynamic community of more than 1200 adults and children. Our mission statement captures our essence: First Parish is a welcoming UU congregation that seeks ways to deepen spiritually, build community, and make a positive difference in the world. Our senior minister, Rev. Howard Dana, was called to First Parish in June 2013 following thirteen years at the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg, PA. We also have a full-time minister for Pastoral Care and an affiliate minister who serves as the Community Minister for Restorative Justice. A staff of twelve is responsible for overseeing all aspects of First Parish. We are proud of our Green Sanctuary. The Meeting House is brimming daily with activities: covenant groups, choir rehearsals and cooking for Caring Connection to name just a few. The Pastoral Care Council works in collaboration with our minister and a cadre of lay ministers to provide spiritual and emotional support in times of illness, loss, and crisis. We have a rich and well run RE program. Our life span programs honor the many stages and expressions of our spirituality as we grow. Our music program is large and varied with choirs for all ages and gifted music directors. In addition, the Arts Council promotes and supports dramatic and musical productions. Social action is an integral part of First Parish. The Social Action community oversees more than twenty programs to encourage congregants to engage in many different types of social action activities. For more information, see our website.
