Organization Description:

The First Church is a congregation serving the Chestnut Hill area of Massachusetts, which includes neighborhoods in the City of Boston, the City of Newton and the Town of Brookline. The church is Christian Unitarian, is affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association, and is a member of the Council of Christian Churches in the UUA. It is in as suburban/urban setting and a pastoral size congregation (approx. 100 members). Besides Sunday morning worship, there would be a variety of learning opportunities such as working on a new Sunday school curriculum and helping with research for a series of adult educational projects underway (e.g. development of a graduate level course on “Church and State” matters with the minister who is a former lawyer). The supervisor is also engaged in several denominational and inter-faith efforts, including one developing effort with the Islamic Studies department at Harvard University.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

The First Church is a Unitarian church in the Christian tradition. The services are generally prayer book style, based on the King’s Chapel of Boston prayer book which was in turn based on the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. The intern would be expected to support the minister in worship most Sundays, to serve as the primary celebrant and preacher at a number of services throughout the church year, and to work comfortably in a setting with a historic Christian message that is nonetheless Unitarian in character and polity.
