Organization Description:
Faith Lutheran Church is the home and sponsor of Faith Kitchen, a community meals program for hungry people that serves great and plentiful meals to over sixty people twice a month. The program is co-managed by members of Faith and the nearby synagogue, Temple Beth Shalom. Guests and cooks prepare and eat meals together. Meals are prepared primarily by volunteers; great local restaurants make entrees about once a month. Food comes from the Greater Boston Food Bank, local bakeries, and Food for Free. You can learn more about Faith Kitchen at faithkitchen.org. Faith Kitchen is also the convener of the informal association of local soup kitchens.
Opportunities for Student Involvement:
You would serve as operations director of Faith Kitchen, responsible for everything but meal preparation. This includes organizing volunteers, ordering food from the food bank, notifying the community about upcoming meals, working with (and sometimes recruiting) local restaurants, helping write grants, talking with and getting to know guests and cooks, helping with long-term planning, and working with the other Cambridge meal programs.
