Milton Academy is a non-sectarian K-12 preparatory school outside of Boston. The upper school has a student population of 680, half of whom are boarders. The role of the Director of Spiritual and Community Development at Milton Academy is multi-faceted. She is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading Sunday chapel services for the boarding community. In addition, she oversees the Affective Education program, including two of its curricula, Values and Social Awareness, and teaches courses on the religions of the Middle East and Asia. The Director of Spiritual and Community Development is also available as a support to students. The chapel program is interfaith in character; it explores the variety of ways people respond to the mystery of human existence and the question of what may exist beyond the world. The director, visiting speakers or students may use the time to teach about a particular practice in a certain tradition, they may illustrate connections amongst a variety of beliefs, or they may reflect on their own personal spiritual experiences and understanding. Overall, the chapel program allows the boarding community to come together in a space of exploration, quiet reflection, and mutual respect.
Opportunities for Student Involvement:
A field education student will assist in teaching the religion courses, as well as the Affective Education courses. Also, he or she may choose to participate in leading and organizing chapel services on Sunday .
