Francis X. Clooney, SJ
This course explores gender and divinity by reading hymns praising Hindu goddesses Laksmi, Maha Devi, Apirami, and Kali, while asking how feminine divinity is constructed in an environment where gods and goddesses flourish. The course at the same time explores the cult of the Virgin Mary, theologically, historically, through key texts. This approach is sharpened by some attention to performative, social, visual dimensions, and through contemporary feminist and theological insights. Not a survey, but an in-depth introduction.
