This course begins with a quick survey of Hinduism its history, beliefs, and practices and moves on to trace the history of Hindu-Christian encounter both in India and the US. Four pieces of writing are studied and discussed as examples of encounter The Crucified Guru (M.Thomas Thangaraj), The Imminent Divine (John Thattamanil), Encountering God (Diana Eck), and Hindu Wisdom for All God's Children (Francis Clooney). The course ends with examining the various theologies of religions and constructing an appropriate theological stance for a healthy encounter with Hindus today. The course will involve both a visit to Hindu temple and meeting Hindus as dialogue partners in class. The aim of the course is to (1) introduce the students to the basic beliefs and practices of Hinduism, through lectures, readings, temple visit, and meetings with Hindus, (2) examine the various ways in which Christians have encountered Hindus in the past, and (3) articulate a theology and praxis for a relevant and meaningful encounter today in the United States.
