From the arbitrary sovereign of the Calvinists to the predictable creator of the Deists, perceptions of God ran the spectrum in early America. Many of the key debates of the periodabout science and slavery, monarchy and poverty, scripture and disestablishmentfell back on assumptions about the character of Deity. This course will examine the most prominent positions on the divine character and consider the ways they shaped the cultural developments of the period.
